The Simple Equation of Successful “Adulting”
In the best of circumstances, the colloquially labeled life phase of “adulting” brings with it responsibilities and circumstances that many have not anticipated or may not have prepared for.
Through its cradle-to-career continuum of care model, Community Partners helps residents of Housing Opportunities Commission’s (HOC) affordable housing and Wait List registrants successfully navigate the challenges and prosper in their prime years.
Here is how some of the programming opportunities supported by donations to Community Partners and offered through HOC’s Resident Services Division add up to successful “adulting.”
Solid Foundations = Fulfilling Futures
Adult Education and Workforce Development (AEWD) opportunities help connect HOC customers with career training and educational services to promote self-empowerment and upward mobility and achieve their career, training and educational goals. Through career fairs, workshops and one-on-one counseling, AEWD helps customers explore a vast horizon of solid career possibilities, guide them through resume and interview preparation and connect them with potential employers.
HOC Academy’s tuition assistance program made a profound impact last fiscal year, awarding nearly $48,000 to more than 40 participants pursuing higher education. Scholarship recipients attended a diverse range of institutions, from local institutions like the University of Maryland to distance learning options at Liberty University.
Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) is a career development program that helps individuals who receive housing subsidies make progress toward economic independence. It enables HUD-assisted families to increase their earned income, reduce their dependence on welfare assistance and rental subsidies and build savings over a five-year period to put toward homeownership or other household needs.
Homebuyers Advantage Club provides education and hands-on guidance to support low- and moderate-income families who are interested in becoming homebuyers. The recently-launched program’s first grant was awarded in May 2026; six program participants are on track to purchase their own home within a year.
Financial literacy workshops teach smart money and credit management to help participants lay the foundation for a more secure future.

Stronger Fathers = Stronger Families
The Fatherhood Initiative Program helps fathers enhance their relationships with their children, develop essential life skills and create pathways toward personal, financial and family success. This investment reflects a growing recognition among donors that strengthening fathers strengthens entire families and creates lasting benefits for children and communities.
This year, the Fatherhood Initiative Program received an exciting boost through a generous anonymous philanthropic gift, providing additional incentive funding that will help recognize participant achievement, encourage sustained engagement and remove barriers that can prevent fathers from completing the program.
Greater Support = Greater Communities
Demand for and participation in the programs funded by your donations to Community Partners continually grows. Customer engagements are on pace to increase by close to 25% this year at the hundreds of HOC Resident Services events held in HOC communities and throughout Montgomery County. Also expanding is the network of formalized partnerships (160 and counting) we have established with a variety of organizations to support our mission.
With additional philanthropic gifts – anonymous or not – Community Partners will continue to expand program offerings, forge new partnerships and deliver the life-enhancing services that your Montgomery County neighbors need to thrive throughout their “adulting” and chart a more prosperous future for their families.
Please join us in this effort with your tax-deductible contribution to the Community Partners 2026 Inspire fundraising campaign. The campaign will culminate with our Inspire Celebration on Oct. 15, 2026, at the Silver Spring headquarters of the Housing Opportunities Commission.
