Igniting Curiosity and Excitement for STEM

This wasn’t just another school supply giveaway. For the approximately 500 children and parents who braved the late summer heat, the Aug. 16 Back-to-School STEM Festival in Silver Spring was also an inspiring experience in STEM.

The event, a collaboration with the Montgomery County Department of Recreation, local educators, nonprofit organizations and 15 different vendors, was about igniting curiosity, nurturing creativity and opening doors for youth who face many obstacles to achieving success. It was an invaluable investment in the success of the youth and their families who live in affordable housing.

Bringing STEM Within Reach

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are today’s pathways to exploration, the keys to innovation and the propulsion for upward mobility. For many children who live in affordable housing, access to high-quality STEM education and hands-on experiences are out of reach.

Our Back-to-School STEM Festival provided an exciting accessible gateway to those opportunities. Arriving children and their families were greeted not as passive attendees, but rather were engaged as budding scientists, engineers and inventors. The East County Community Recreation Center was transformed into a carnival of discovery where kids learned about drones, the science behind gaming and more. They embarked on a journey of their choosing at the VR (virtual reality) station. They even created their own robots. Student attendees also received guidance on how to continue their STEM explorations at home.

Old School Tools Still Have a Place

As much as emerging technologies are defining education and the workplace, students still need the basics to succeed. We distributed brand new backpacks stocked with essential school supplies to more than 400 youth. Their appreciation – and that of their parents – was immensely gratifying.

Youth also appreciated and enjoyed the fun parts of the day: face painting, tons of games and activities – and even the back-to-school haircuts (125 of them) provided free by a generous local barbershop.

While their kids were busy exploring all the fun exhibits, parents were able to visit with representatives of HOC, Montgomery County and community-based non-profit organizations to gather helpful information about their programs about financial services, housing, food assistance, healthcare, immigrant services, energy assistance and more. These resources are critical in helping families navigate the many challenges they face. By connecting families with these services, we help ensure that they have the support they need to provide a stable and nurturing environment for their children.

Cultivating Hope and Building Futures

Many families expressed gratitude — not just for the supplies and information, but for the sense of community and empowerment that permeated the day.

For our HOC families, the Back-to-School STEM Festival was more than a day of fun; it was a bridge to new opportunities, equipping children with new skills and helpful resources.

Looking Forward

The success of the Back-to-School STEM Festival is measured not just by the number of people who walked through the doors, but rather in the excitement and confidence generated. Going forward, HOC and HOCP will invite these families to participate in engaging STEM activities throughout the school year where young people can continue to learn about robots, chemistry, drones and fun lessons in physics. Our goal is to ensure that every child has the chance to explore, question, dream and achieve their best life. By investing in our children, especially those too often left behind, we plant the seeds of innovation, transformation, and success.
