Helping Seniors Build the Pillars of Healthy Aging

Healthy aging – growing better while growing older – means staying active, engaged and nourished. Community Partners supports programs that help residents of the Housing Opportunities Commission’s (HOC) affordable housing communities and Wait List registrants build all three of those pillars of healthy aging.

Through the multiple partnerships made possible by donations to Community Partners, HOC Resident Services provides group and individual activities and resources every month that contribute to the physical, emotional and social well-being of hundreds of our senior residents.

Seniors In Motion Tend to Stay In Motion

The fitness programs we organize and conduct at HOC senior properties help our residents incorporate physical activity into their daily routines. Regular opportunities to move, stretch and exercise can support strength, mobility and overall wellness while creating another avenue for seniors to connect with their neighbors.

One such activity is Bone Builders, a weekly weight training program designed to help adults 55+ gain strength, improve balance and enhance energy. Participants use hand- and-ankle weighted training and balance exercises to protect against falls and fractures caused by osteoporosis.

HOC regularly creates meaningful opportunities for HOC seniors to gather, celebrate, build lasting relationships – and just have fun. (Shhh – Many of them don’t even notice we’re sneaking a bit more movement and exercise into their day at these gatherings.)

Our Mix & Mingle and Senior Prom events are always well-attended big hits, bringing together residents of multiple HOC senior communities to relax, sing, dance and enjoy each other’s company.

Arts For The Aging

Engaging Creatively

Activity and engagement take an artistic turn in the numerous monthly programs that bring out seniors’ creative talents through painting, jewelry making, multi-medium sculptures and more. Through long-time HOC partner Arts for the Aging, HOC seniors have opportunities to explore their creativity, express themselves and engage with others through the arts.

Your donations to Community Partners also support group trips to museums, performances, farmers markets and other venues that for many seniors would otherwise be out of reach. Those physically and mentally stimulating outings are priceless in the memories and relationships they develop.

Tackling Health and Hunger

No matter your age, caring for and fueling your body is the key to staying active and engaged. For many seniors, particularly those on modest fixed incomes, healthcare and food security present the toughest challenges. Community Partners addresses those head-on.

Through a partnership with the University of Maryland Nursing Program, HOC connects seniors with connect with health education and wellness resources right where they live, offering blood pressure and other wellness screenings.

We also provide educational training on Medicaid, Medicare and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at each HOC senior property, with the goal of helping our seniors understand each program and make sure they maintain the benefits that can protect their health.

Multiple times each month, HOC partners with the Capital Area Food Bank, Manna and Emmanuel Brinklow Church and other local resources to provide free grocery deliveries to our senior communities, along with healthy food on weekends when meal programs do not operate. As a result, you – through your donations to Community Partners – are clearing food security off the plate of seniors’ worries.
