Vehicles for Change Program (VfC)
The Vehicles for Change (VfC) Program is collaborative effort of the Housing Opportunities Community Partners, Inc., Vehicles for Change, Inc., and the Department of Housing Affairs through a Community Development Block Grant Program.
What is Vehicles for Change, Inc. (VfC)?
VfC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to assist low income families acquire a used car in good working order in order to assist the family achieve economic self-sufficiency. VfC accepts donated cars and refurbishes them. Eligible low-income individuals can then purchase the refurbished automobile. VfC provides each recipient instruction on car maintenance and guarantees the car for a year.
Through our collaboration, Community Partners screens eligible HOC subsidized housing residents. The resident must be employed, have children, and need a vehicle to assist them in becoming economically self-sufficient. The resident must have the means to pay for insurance and to contribute $900 towards the cost of the vehicle. Community Partners contributes $1,100 per vehicle through funding obtained through the Community Development Block Grant and through contributions made by donors supporting the program. Community Partners has also brought in several Montgomery County, MD social service agencies to partner in this project, including Families Foremost, Crossways Communities, Dwelling Place and Shelter Program. They too can refer eligible clients for a VfC automobile.
