UNDER 21 SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION PROGRAM
Montgomery County Health and Human Services Department has provided funding for the Community Partners' Coin Club for the purpose of preventing substance abuse among youth ages 9-13.
The Coin Club uses a proven approach for deterring substance abuse, which is providing a positive alternative. Through this program over 20 young people were introduced to the hobby of collecting coins and were given the knowledge and supplies to continue coin collecting long after the program ends.
Community Partners Coin Club members were given the opportunity to join the Montgomery County Coin Club as well (MCCC). As a member of MCCC, each member could participate in their monthly meetings, hear guest speakers, and learn about past, present, and future coins.
In April of 2006, 27 very inspired youth traveled to Philadelphia, PA to visit the U.S Mint. While touring the mint, the youth observed the process of transforming zinc, copper, and silver into new coins.
This program has enjoyed great success as scores of young children have responded enthusiastically to it. The coin club members continue to collect coins and share with each other even after the culmination of the program in April, 2006. Community Partners, looks forward to funding this program in FY 2007 and others like it, that provide positive alternatives to drugs and alcohol.
